From navigating the challenges of graduate school to forging a path through management consulting and pharmaceutical strategy, Ben will share key moments and decision points from his career journey. Drawing on the valuable skills developed as a PhD student at UBC and trainee in the Stem Cell Network, Ben will highlight how these experiences equipped him to adapt to diverse roles and successfully transition from academia to industry. His talk will offer insights into leveraging academic foundations for career growth and embracing new opportunities beyond the lab.

Dr. Ben Paylor’s Biography:

Ben Paylor is currently a Vice President of Neuroscience Strategy at AbbVie, where he shapes the company’s long-term vision across neuroscience early discovery, clinical development, commercial, and business development activities. Prior to joining AbbVie, Ben held roles at Novartis in New Jersey, serving in Neuroscience Strategy and as Chief of Staff to the US Commercial President, and at McKinsey & Company in Toronto and New York, focusing on healthcare consulting. He earned his PhD in Experimental Medicine from the University of British Columbia, a Master’s in Cardiovascular Biology from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, and a Bachelor’s in Pharmacology and Physiology from the University of Western Ontario. Ben lives in the Chicago area with his wife Christina and their 2 young children, Evelyn and George. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, cooking, and curling.
