Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships

Scholarships and Awards

Undergraduate students in the School of Biomedical Engineering are considered each year for a variety of awards and scholarships that recognize academic achievement, leadership, and contributions to the community.

The criteria for these awards vary based on the specific award. Some are granted automatically based on academic merit, while others require students to submit an application or provide supporting documents.

Specific award deadlines and details will be communicated to current undergraduate students via the SBME Undergraduate Advising Canvas Course and through email notifications. Current undergraduate students are considered automatically for awards unless otherwise indicated.

For more information, students can use the following website to search for awards they may be eligible for: https://tools.students.ubc.ca/award-search/.

Questions regarding any awards can be submitted to awards@sbme.ubc.ca.

School of Biomedical Engineering Scholarship

Awards of $5,000 each have been made available annually by the School of Biomedical Engineering for outstanding second-year domestic Bachelor of Applied Science students entering the Biomedical Engineering program.

Selection criteria include academic excellence, leadership, community engagement, and a demonstrated passion for biomedical engineering, such as involvement in entrepreneurial activities, projects, or related initiatives. Students will be notified of application procedures and deadlines for this award through their undergraduate Canvas course usually during the Winter Term 1.

McEwen Family Entrance Award in Biomedical Engineering

A $25,000 renewable entrance award has been made available annually through a gift from Dr. Jim McEwen, OC (B.A.Sc. 1971, Ph.D. 1975, D.Sc. 2011) and his family for a Bachelor of Applied Science student entering the Pre-Biomedical Engineering program who is a Canadian citizen and has demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and entrepreneurial initiative in the field of biomedical engineering. Subject to continued academic achievement and demonstrated initiative in biomedical engineering innovation, the award will be renewed for a further year of study.

Dr. McEwen is a biomedical engineer, innovator and entrepreneur who invented the microprocessor-controlled automatic tourniquet system, a medical device which improves surgical safety and is used in over 20,000 procedures daily in operating rooms worldwide. Founder of the Biomedical Engineering Department at the Vancouver Hospital & Health Sciences Centre in 1975, Dr. McEwen is an Officer of the Order of Canada, was inducted into the United States National Inventors Hall of Fame, and has received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, honourary doctorates from the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, and the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Association of Professional Engineers of British Columbia.

Students admitted into the Bachelor of Applied Science program (Pre-Biomedical Engineering Timetable) will be notified of the availability of the award as well as the application procedures through email in spring.

Geyer Family Award in Biomedical Engineering

An award of $3,650 have been made available through an endowment established by Paul Geyer for undergraduate students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and who are in the Biomedical Engineering Program in the Faculty of Applied Science. Preference is given to students with an entrepreneurial spirit, an interest in the local biomedical engineering industry and demonstrated leadership and communication skills. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

Students will be notified of application procedures and deadlines for this award through their undergraduate Canvas course usually during the Winter Term 1.

Ezra Kwok Award in Biomedical Engineering

Awards totalling $1,150 have been made available through an endowment established by Dr. Ezra Kwok (B.Sc., Ph.D., M.D.,) for second-, third- or fourth-year standing undergraduate students in the Biomedical Engineering program who demonstrate an interest in applying engineering knowledge to advance innovations in healthcare, medical research or clinical practice. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate leadership in the field. The awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Biomedical Engineering.

Students will be notified of application procedures and deadlines for this award through their undergraduate Canvas course usually during the Winter Term 1.

Dr. Kwok is a physician, engineer, former UBC professor, bioengineering consultant and entrepreneur with a multidisciplinary background in biomedical engineering and healthcare innovation. He founded the graduate-level Biomedical Engineering program at UBC in 2006 and served as its inaugural Program Director until 2010. Dr. Kwok has received numerous professional honours, including Fellow of Engineers Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada. This award has been established to reflect Dr. Kwok’s commitment to promoting interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering and healthcare fields.

Research Awards

What are Research Awards?

Undergraduate students eager to build research skills can take advantage of award programs that fund opportunities to work alongside faculty on innovative projects. These initiatives help connect students with faculty members by providing financial support for research positions. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Undergraduate Summer Research Award

Are you a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada undergraduate student interested in gaining research experience in an academic setting that compliments your current studies?

NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are designed to stimulate interest in research in the areas of natural sciences and engineering in an effort to encourage students to partake in graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields.

Students do not need to be in the School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) to work with an SBME professor. SBME students, in turn, may also hold an award in another department or university, if you find a faculty member who is interested in supervising you.

Students in SMBE who would like to work under supervision of the SBME faculty members are mostly eligible to apply for NSERC USRA through both Faculty of Applied Science and Faculty of Medicine. Please note that regardless of the Faculty you apply through, all applications must also be submitted electronically to NSERC Official Website, including the upload of transcripts.
