Modern AI Summer Intensive
A five-day hands-on workshop intended to build foundational understanding and skills
Whether you see immediate connections to your research, or are simply curious to learn more about this fast-evolving field. This 5-day, half-day summer school introduces modern machine learning and deep learning concepts for biomedical researchers. It combines short lectures with hands-on, notebook-based activities covering the foundations of machine learning, PyTorch, neural network architectures for different data structures, representation learning, generative modeling, and multimodal AI. Participants will develop both a conceptual understanding of modern AI methods and practical starting points for applying them to their problems. Some prior experience with Python is highly encouraged. Preparatory resources will be shared in advance for participants who would like additional background.
Who can attend: Everyone, including faculty members, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and research associates but priority will be given to SBME members

The workshop will be led by Dr. Tiam Heydari and other guest speakers. Tiam Heydari is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia in Prof. Peter Zandstra’s lab. He completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at UBC and previously earned his MSc and BSc in Theoretical Physics from Sharif University of Technology. His research combines artificial intelligence, biophysics, systems biology, and systems immunology, to build interpretable models of cellular decision-making and multicellular systems.
