Research Seminar: Hematopoietic stem cells from womb to tomb: expanding the health span – Dr. Camilla Forsberg

June 22 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am PDT

Meeting ID: 245 009 433 319 934
Passcode: Yi9XC38f

Location: Diamond Family Lecture Theatre, BC Cancer Research Institute (Main Floor, 675 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver) + Microsoft Teams

This talk will examine how hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) support lifelong health by sustaining blood and immune system function. Dr. Forsberg will discuss how HSC activity changes across developmental stages, from prenatal life through aging, and how these changes are influenced by disease, injury, and environmental stressors. The presentation will highlight strategies to enhance healthy blood formation during early life and approaches to mitigate age-related HSC decline, including targeting mechanisms that contribute to platelet-driven cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Camilla Forsberg’s Biography:

Dr. Camilla Forsberg is a Professor of Bio molecular Engineering and Director of the Institute for the Biology of Stem Cells at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She earned her PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied chromatin regulation of gene expression, and completed postdoctoral training in hematopoietic stem cell biology at Stanford University under Irving Weissman.
Her research focuses on understanding how hematopoietic stem cells develop, function, and adapt across the lifespan. The Forsberg lab investigates how intrinsic and external factors shape HSC differentiation and long-term regenerative capacity, with the goal of improving health outcomes and resilience to disease. In addition to her research, Dr. Forsberg is actively involved in training and mentorship, leading programs in stem cell biology and career development, and contributing to scientific advisory boards and professional societies.
