Exoskeletons and active prosthetic limbs could improve mobility for hundreds of millions of people, but two serious challenges must first be overcome: we need ways of identifying what a device should do to benefit an individual user, and we need cheap, efficient hardware that can do it.

Join us for an exhilarating day of innovation and discovery at UBC’s School of Biomedical Engineering Research Day! This event promises to be a celebration of cutting-edge research, collaboration, and creativity within the field of biomedical engineering. We invite the entire SBME community of students, faculty, and staff to attend and participate.
As this event is hosted on Halloween, we invite you to come in costume. There will be prizes, so don’t miss out!
Event Highlights:
Keynote Presentations: This year we are highlighting the research of two junior SBME’s faculty members: Drs. Govind Kaigala and Manu Madhav.
Trainee Talks: Select Masters and PhD BME students will present their research in short Trainee Talks. Come support them as they develop their presentation and communication skills!
Poster Session: There is such a diverse range of biomedical research excellence at SBME. Our Poster Session gives graduate BME students the chance to share their findings with the community. Lunch will be served! (Make sure to RSVP to reserve your lunch)
Costume Contest: Inject a bit of fun into the day by participating in our costume contest. Get creative and showcase your spookiest (or non-spooky!) Halloween costume. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.
Panel Discussion: Interested in a career as a biomedical engineering professor? Curious about the professorship application process? This panel will discuss the process of applying for a professorship, including the often mysterious “chalk talk”.
Mock Chalk Talks: Speaking of the mysterious “chalk talk”, two postdocs will be given the opportunity to present a half hour chalk talk and to receive feedback. This is a unique and rare opportunity, so if you are interested make sure to register!
Prizes and Awards: Recognizing excellence in research, we will present awards and prizes to outstanding contributors in various categories. Be there to applaud the hard work and dedication of our students!
