What We Do
Biomedical Engineering and SBME
Biomedical Engineers work at the cutting edge of technology and biological science to transform healthcare for all. SBME is a blueprint for the future of medicine, and we are training the leaders who will build that future.
We are an emerging leader in Canadian Life Sciences advancement, working in partnership with academia, entrepreneurs, industry, hospitals and various institutions both in BC and abroad.
If you are passionate, curious and ready to make an impact on the world both now and in the future, SBME provides you with the opportunities to do it; and you are most welcome here.
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
As a Biomedical Engineering student, you’ll take a series of core courses aimed at building a strong foundation in engineering, biology, math, chemistry, and design. In your third year of study, you’ll have the opportunity to customize your degree to your interests by specializing in one of four streams:
-
Biomechanics and Biomaterials
Apply the principles of mechanics and materials science to solving dynamic physical problems in the human biological system. -
Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering
Apply engineering and design principles to the analysis, understanding and leveraging of cellular and molecular biological processes. -
Biomedical Systems and Signals
Use engineering principles to understand fundamental processes that produce images and electronic signals in biological systems. -
Biomedical Informatics
Learn to apply computational and engineering techniques to increase the understanding and utility of biological and medical data.
GRADUATE PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
SBME offers three graduate programs:
-
Master of Applied Science
Two-year research-based program. The program trains students in the fundamentals of Biomedical Engineering and provides an extended research experience. -
Doctor of Philosophy
Offers students an opportunity to work at the highest level of research. Students are expected to complete their candidacy examination within 18 months and complete doctoral dissertation research within three to four years. -
Master of Engineering
12-16 month program aimed at students who wish to enhance their professional skills in biomedical engineering. Students engage in a combination of course work and internship or co-op work experience.
