Indigenous Peoples’ experiences and realities within the Canadian Healthcare system

SBME Research Seminar: The RNA folding problem remains open – Dr. Rhiju Das

The discovery and design of biologically important RNA molecules has lagged behind proteins, in part due to the general difficulty of three-dimensional RNA structural characterization. What are the prospects for an ‘AlphaFold moment’ for RNA? I’ll describe some recent progress in modeling RNA structure from old-fashioned and new machine learning, cryoelectron microscopy, and current and upcoming internet-scale competitions hosted on the Eterna, Kaggle, and CASP platforms.

Indigenous Peoples’ experiences and realities within the Canadian Healthcare system

Indigenous Peoples’ experiences and realities within the Canadian Healthcare system</font color>

Indigenous peoples have consistently faced health inequities in the Canadian Healthcare system, which have contributed to poorer health outcomes. This disparity is still a reality for many Indigenous peoples seeking care. It is important to understand how systemic racism and stereotypes influence the care Indigenous peoples receive today. The SBME Indigenous Engagement Committee in collaboration with the UBC Learning Circle will be hosting Indigenous speakers from different backgrounds to share the realities of their experiences in the Canadian Healthcare system. Our goal for this panel is to help spread awareness of existing issues in the healthcare system and discuss actionable steps we can all take towards minimizing the health inequities within the Canadian Healthcare system.

Panelists:

• Nadine Caron, MD, MPH, FRCSC – Associate Professor, Dept. of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine (NMP), Co-Director of Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health

• Emily Flaschner – SBME Undergraduate Student and Indigenous Engagement Committee Member

• Carmen McLachlan – Front Line Worker, Vancouver Downtown Eastside, Indigenous Wellness Liaison at Vancouver General Hospital and St Paul’s Hospital

• Jaye Dee Currie, Indigenous Wellness Liaison Providence Healthcare, St. Paul’s Hospital
