Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Hedtrich for being appointed a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair for her research in Human Disease Models. As a part of the appointment, she received $1.4 million dollars for the work her lab is doing to drive scientific breakthroughs and advance innovation in the treatment of inflammatory and genetic diseases.
Dr. Hedtrich’s lab employs complex bioengineered human (disease) models, like organ on a chip, to significantly advance the understanding of the manifestation, progression, and treatment of inflammatory and genetic diseases of human epithelia, with a focus on the skin, lungs and intestine.
“I am thrilled with the recognition and am excited for the opportunities this will provide to advance the research in my lab that will in turn benefit patients,” comments Dr. Hedtrich.
Six UBC researchers were announced as new and renewed Canada Research Chairs in this latest round of appointments, representing an investment of $5.1 million.
The Canada Research Chairs Program enables Canadian universities to achieve the highest levels of research excellence and become world-class research centres. Chairholders improve the depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthen Canada’s international competitiveness, and help train the next generation of highly skilled people through student supervision, teaching and the coordination of other researchers’ work.
